CYLINDER HEAD MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES
Brought to you by
Students:
1. Cylinder Head Warpage: Place a straightedge on the deck surface. Then try to slide a feeler gauge-under the Straight edge. The thickness of the feeler gauge equals the amount of warpage.
Tools Used: Straightedge and a flat feeler gauge.
2. Value Guide Wear: Measure the valve guide at the top, middle, and bottom. Measure the valve stem at these points, subtract the valve stem diameter from the valve guide diameter to determine the clearance.
Tools Used: Telescoping Gauge, Ball Gauge, and an Outside Micrometer
3. Valve Seat Width: Measure the width of a valve seat with a machinist's rule. If the seat is too wide use a different angle stone to narrow the seat.
Tools Used: Machinist Rule and various angle grinding stone.
4. Valve Spring Tension: Spring tension is measured on a spring tester by compressing the spring to a Factory specification and reading the scale
Tools Used: Spring Tension Tester
5. Valve Spring Straightness: Place each spring next to a square on a flat surface. Rotate the spring while checking for a gap between the side of the spring and the square. Replace all springs that are not square
Tools Used: A flat surface and a combination square
6. Valve Stem Diameter: Measure the valve stem at the top, center, and bottom of the stem to determine the wear.
Tools Used: An Outside Micrometer.
7. Valve Face: Use a valve grinding machine to grind the valve face surface. Measure the valve face with a machinist rule
Tools Used: Machinist Rule, Valve Grinding Machine.
8. Valve Margin: After performing valve face grinding, measure the valve margin with a machinist rule. If the margin is too thin the valve will bum.
Tools Used: Machinist Rule.
9. Installed Height: After grinding the valves and seats, install the valve retainers and keepers. Next measure the valve spring installed height, this will determine if you need valve spring shims.
Tools Used: Micrometer
10. Valve Face To Valve Seat Contact Point: Wipe Prussian Blue Dye on the valve face, install the valve and slap it down into it's seat. Remove the valve and examine the contact line left by the blue dye.
Tools Used: Prussian Blue Dye.
