Penny Problem

 

Get in groups of 3.  For each question, one person is the recorder, one is the sorter, and one is the counter.  Switch roles for each question.  Turn in one paper per group by the end of class.

 

1.)    Take a bag of 25 pennies, sort them by year, and line them up in a single line from oldest to newest.  Record the years of the pennies in order.

 

 

 

 

2.)    Find the penny in the very middle, and record its year.  What central tendency does this penny represent?

3.)    Stack any pennies from the same year on top of one another.  Find the year whose stack of pennies is the highest, and record it.  (Note: you may have more than one year.)  Which central tendency does this stack represent?

4.)    Add together all of the dates on the pennies, and divide this sum by the number of pennies.  Record this quotient.  Which central tendency does this quotient represent?

5.)    Compare the values of your three central tendencies.  Are any of these values the same?

 

 

 

 

6.)    If I someone asked you what the typical year for your set of pennies was, which of the three central tendencies would you give?  Explain why.
