Triangles in My Life
Objective:
Students will find a way that triangles
play a role in their lives, legitimizing the study of this most basic polygon.
Students will write a short essay communicating how triangles are involved
in their lives, using material from the unit to classify and compare
properties of triangles. Students will also construct a visual
aid and give a two minute presentation reporting their work. This
project will be both great review and a fun way for students to interact
and look at the world around them in a new, mathematical way. Some examples
of triangles in life are bridge supports, Doritos!, sailboats, and stained
glass windows.
Connections to Standards:
Students will get a chance to find
real life applications for their knowledge as they work on communicating
and writing mathematical thinking and reasoning. Real life applications
and communication are listed in both the NCTM and ISBE Standards.
Assessment:
Students will be graded on the presence
of unit material and triangle analysis in their short essay and the completeness
of the project.
