Course Description

C&I 304 M is the fourth and final course in a professional sequence that will help preservice teachers in the life-long process of becoming a secondary mathematics teacher. It builds upon the first three courses in the sequence and complements the student teaching experience. Although mathematical investigations and theories of learning and teaching permeate this course as they do all others in the sequence, students in C&I 304 are expected to a) synthesize theory and practice, b) provide evidence that they are incorporating broad perspectives of mathematics, teaching, and learning into teaching practices appropriate for diverse student populations c) continue to grow in knowledge and skills that support reflective student-centered teaching, both inquiry-based learning and skill building, and the development of school communities that provide opportunities for all. Participation in community, inquiry, reflection, and classroom teaching situations along with completion of presentation portfolios are designed to help preservice teachers prepare for teaching and for procuring a professional teaching position.

*Goals
We will collaboratively:

  • Technology & Inquiry: Broaden our understanding of, engage in, and develop lessons that promote inquiry learning through the use of Internet resources. This includes participation in interdisciplinary (science and mathematics) and application-based projects.
  • Diversity & Pedagogy: Build a stronger foundation for teaching: This includes revisiting the IL learning standards and NCTM principals and standards and using them as guides for discussion of all aspects of instruction, especially the cultural differences in diverse school communities (e.g. local, inner city, suburban), curricular organization (e.g sequence of K-12 content), scheduling (e.g.block classes), and technology enhancement opportunities.
  • Community & Pedagogy: Strengthen our understanding and enactment of assessment, evaluation, behavioral management, and classroom management practices as integral parts of instruction that serve to promote positive classroom climates relative to diverse community needs.
  • Service & Community: Deepen our understanding of professionalism. We will investigate approaches to establishing a positive working relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, and students as well as among secondary schools, community colleges, and universities, as well as work toward gaining a professional teaching position. All will participate in mock interactions with various school personnel, challenging students, interviewers, and prepare professional electronic and hardcopy presentation portfolios.
