Technology is widely used in our society today,
and it is important for students and teachers alike to understand it magnitude,
keep up with its rapid growth, and use it on a daily basis. For some
this might to nerve racking and frustrating at times, for others it comes
easily to them. Unfortunately, I fall under the first category.
Even though I have grown up in the technological age, it stills bewitches
me. There are times when I wish we could just go back to the pencil
and paper, but most of the time I am happy that we do have these advances.
There have been times where I wanted to throw a
computer out of the window because it ate a paper, crashed, or just not
cooperating. As students and teachers, we have to realize too that
there are limitations to technology and that not all technological advances
are necessarily good. Technology does have its problems and obstacles
to overcome. For example, the computer is now mostly financially
available everyone. Therefore, many teachers expect the students
to type their papers and turn them in. Or they expect to turn in
assignments via email or Internet. However, the teacher also has
to think about the ones who cannot afford the computer and think of ways
to accommodate their needs. Maybe the teacher will allow them
extra time on an assignment so the student could go to the library or use
the teacher's computer to finish the task. Other little problems
may arise, too, that the teacher has to be aware of when using computers.
For instance, what will he or she do when the computers freeze or shut
down on own. What if there is not enough laptops or computers for
everyone, who decides who is at a computer by themselves or has to share?
Lastly, many times a computer crashes or a disc crashes, will the teacher
allow the student extra time to redo the project? Is it fair that
they have to redo because of technical errors, ones they have no power
over?
Technology, particularly computers, is a great advancement,
but how much of it will I depend on or use in my classroom, I am not sure.
Probably when I become more comfortable with it and it stops eating and
destroying my discs, I would have a better attitude about using them on
a more frequent basis.
