Course Description

C&I 336: The Computer and Mathematics Education

Course Overview
This course has these major goals:

  1. To explore the role of technology in the contemporary school mathematics classroom
  2. To examine illustrative technologies and technology-based lesson materials
  3. To learn about major research issues in technology-based mathematics education
  4. To become familiar with learning and presenting an educational technology in mathematics
  5. To gain experience in developing and teaching sample technology-intensive mathematics lessons.

The NCTM Standards envision classrooms...

"as places where interesting problems are regularly explored using important mathematical ideas. Our premise is that what a student learns depends to a great degree on how he or she has learned it. For example, one could expect students recording measurements of real objects, collecting information and describing their properties using statistics, and exploring the properties of a function by examining its graph". (NCTM Curriculum Standards, page 5).
