Grading

Attendance and Participation - 10%

It is assumed that everyone will come to class prepared every day. Any absences must be cleared with the instructor in advance. Your participation in class is most important if we are to meet the needs of everyone involved.

Journals - 15%

You will be given writing prompts daily while we are in class to include in your journals. I will also expect you to continue writing in these journals as you complete your project. This is a place for you to take the time to reflect and learn from your experiences.

Annotated Bibliographies - 15%

Find three assessment resources and write a detailed description of each resource. These may be books, articles, or web sites. Write your annotations clear enough and complete enough so that if a colleague would read your annotation, they would know whether or not they would want to buy the resource.

Project - 60%

This MUST be meaningful to you and/or your school or district. Recognizing that all of us are at different places in our knowledge of assessment, the first requirement for this project is for you to tell me WHY and HOW this is meaningful to you and/or your school or district. Because we are all at different places on the continuum of assessment knowledge and wisdom, this project to be something that helps you grow in your knowledge from wherever you are now. At the same time, these projects must represent the rigor required of a graduate level course from UIUC. We will define the scoring of these projects as we proceed through the course.

Narrative should include:

  • Target subject and grade level
  • Narrative - tell me about the situation - what practices are in place - what’s being worked on
  • Describe the goal of this activity
  • Rationale for why you’re doing this
  • How your project relates to the Illinois Learning Standards or the Illinois Performance Indicators
  • Examples of the tools you will use and the data you will collect

Guiding Questions:

  • Where are you in your thinking about assessments and how they related to you in your current position?
  • What’s going on in assessment in your classroom/school/district?
  • What’s a need that you see in your classroom/school/district?
  • Ask yourself if what you are doing is making a difference and what kind of difference is it making?

Sample Ideas:

  • Look at some of your past quizzes or exams to look at they types of questions paying particular attention to the question types – how could you improve these and assess more higher order thinking skills?
  • Combine all the different kinds of data your school receives and write the story, if Disaggregation of the data exists, choose a sub-population and compare their story
  • Design as assessment system for your algebra class you are going to teach next year
  • Relate Algebraic Habits of Mind to assessment items in all subject areas of ISAT/PSAE
