Notes for Week 3

June 24 - 28

Monday:

  • In class, we will look at the conic sections (ellipses and hyperbolas), begin looking at GSP Version IV and Java Sketchpad. We will do some other mathematics activities as well. One of them should start using Fathom software. Please see me if you still need an installation cd.
  • For today, you should have read the summaries of the Standards and as much of the Navigations Series that you can. Continue reading it throughout the week. I will ask for a short description of what you are gaining from it in class today and on Wednesday.
  • Read Brahier, Chapter 7. Respond to the following question:
    • Page 205, #1

Tuesday:

  • In class, we will continue looking at Fathom and doing mathematics. We will also explore interdisciplinary data collection through data collection probes (motion detectors, etc.)
  • Read Brahier, Chapter 8. Respond to one of the following questions:
    • Page 241, #1, #2, or #8

Wednesday:

  • In class, we will hopefully explore data collection, use of Fathom, coupled with GPS (Global Positioning System).
  • Read Brahier, Chapter 9. Respond to one of the following questions:
    • Page 267, #2 or #3

Thursday:

  • In class, microteaching sessions. Each person will have again only 10 minutes. The idea you use to teach should come from ideas read in your Navigations Series book. You may use an idea directly, or adapt an idea. The only restriction is that the lesson must be generated from a problem. Note then, if the problem really is a "problem" at either middle school or high school grade levels, then the students may not solve it completely in the time allotted. That is OK.
  • For Monday, Read Brahier, Chapter 10. Respond to one of the following questions:
    • Page 294, #6 or #9
