Teachers' Page

Welcome to the 11-12 grade wing of our virtual classroom. To the left, you will see links for students, to lessons, and for the plan that we used to complete this project. For teachers, the lessons section will most likely be the most helpful. It includes not only lessons, but links that are pertinent to those lessons.

As you peruse the sight, it will be helpful to know how we have organized the lessons. They are organized into two strands:

  • Functions--This strand focuses on developing the idea of functions, especially as they pertain to the "input-output" concept. Students often enter calculus with a very weak concept of what a function is and this hampers their learning.
  • Derivatives--In this strand we idea the concept of a derivative. Students learn both how to find derivatives, but just as important, what a derivative is. We ask students to think about derivatives conceptually and experience them in "real-world" contexts (i.e. velocity and acceleration).

You will notice that many of these lessons are inquiry-based. They will challenge your students, and you may need more than one day for several of the lessons. This is by design as mathematics in the real world is less about self-contained lessons than it is "story-shell" units.

Please keep in mind that this piece of curriculum was developed with NCTM and Illinois Learning Standards. At the end of each lesson, relevant standards are listed. Feedback is welcome at lg-allen@uiuc.edu or msacks@uiuc.edu
