Overview
Issues and Trends in mathematics education is an introduction to the many facets
of mathematics education and an appropriate for all graduate students interested in
learning about the interplay of school mathematics, teaching, learning, and teacher
education within the mathematics education community. This semester a historical
perspective provides opportunities to study trends by connecting current issues and the
current issues and the current reform movement to events and materials of the past. An
understanding of the shifing goals in mthematics education provides a backdrop to the
study of trends in classroom technologies that range from the slate to the Internet.
While doctoral students take a look at the diversity of mathematics education research
and international issues and trends, master students will focus on classroom practices
and action research. All students will engage in mathematical activities that shed
light on various issues and trends. Individual literature reviews provide opportunity
for depth of study in student-selected areas of special interest. A packet of readings
is available at Notes-n-Quotes (on John St.). Student selection and reading of
historical and recent literature is also essential to the learning of all.
General Purpose
Expand understanding and communication of multiple perspectives of issues and trends
with respect to historical developments in mathematics education
Specific Goals
- Gain familiarization with leaders in the field (readings, disscussions, midterm and final synopses, dialogue with the past, position paper)
- Investigate mathematics (essence of maths paper, problem solving - multiple entry journals)
- Accomplish writing a literature review in your area of special interest (Major paper & poster presentation)
- Become a contributing member of a learning community (groupwork & leadership opportunities)
- Learn basic skills (e.g. using a handbook, finding resources, abstracting, journaling, communicating electronically, writing a literature review, writing in APA 5th edition style)
- Reflect upon your (journal entries, final exam)
