Syllabus

There are these main parts of the course

  1. Review of key issues in mathematics curriculum development
  2. Review of research in mathematics curriculum development
  3. Analysis of selected current text materials in mathematics
  4. Comparative analysis of contemporary curriculum materials
  5. Preparation of two 'white papers'
    1. Report of results of items 3 and 4 listed above
    2. Review of research related to items 3 and 4
  6. Final project, to be either
    1. Preparation of a proposal for funding to develop curriculum that is based on White Papers I and II
    2. Development of a prototypical curriculum piece that could be expected to result from external funding, such as might be expected from 6A.



Schedule

Week One     Saturday, January 26
  9am - 11:30am: Room 37 Ed. Bldg.
Overview of issues
  1. Please bring a copy of a mathematics textbook from which you are teaching, or are likely to teach (I will bring some texts for those who may not be able to do this)
  2. There is an assigned text for the course (Atkinson, Funk, Travers: Probability and Statistics) which I will bring to class. The cost: $10, by check payable to the University of Illinois.

12:30pm - 3pm: Room 10 Ed. Bldg. (Instructional Computer Lab)

  1. Web explorations, including Maryland Virtual High School
  2. Problem solving using Resampling Statistics (software provided)

Probabilistic and dynamic modeling based on Chapters One and Two of textbook
