Notes: Week 3

  1. White Paper Two: Give a brief summary, which should include the various themes for the research that you have identified plus ONE research study in which you are especially interested.
  2. Uri Treisman, original work in Mathematics Dept at UC Berkeley, now at U of Texas Austin
  3. Statistical modeling
    • Chapter Three of the textbook. Statistical inference. Refer to the ESP problem handed out at the last class.
    • Chi Square: How big a difference makes a difference?
  4. Dynamic modeling a la Stella
Try out a problem and be prepared to share. On line.
  5. Adam's test data
    • Last time we did best fit for mean absolute error...that is, the average distance of each y value (Test II score) from the proposed regression line.
    • Today we will do best fit in the least squares sense. For both of these approaches, see the handout given at the last class, 'Building a linear model of data'
  6. Transforming data, from its current form to a set having a specified center (e.g., mean) and spread (such as standard deviation)
  7. Term Project
