Project Hand-In
|
How do I get to the Project Handin? |
|
Go to the class webpage, and head to the Project Handin page. Follow the "Project Handin" link to the login page. |
|
What's my Project Handin username/password? |
|
Your UserName and password are formed by taking your NetID and adding 449 onto the beginning of it. For example, if your NetID is mmckelve, then your username and password are 449mmckelve.
Note that all lower case characters are used! Also, once you log in, you have the option to change your password, so if you'd like to keep your files a little more secure, then feel free to change it.

How do I use project hand-in? |
|
To upload a file, make sure you're in the right folder and click the "Browse..." button. Locate the file to upload on your computer and select it. Click the "Open" button (it's not actually opening the file, it just says that). The file name and path should now appear in the textbox to the left of the browse button. All that's left is to upload the file by clicking the "Upload" button. The page will refresh, the file will be copied to our server, and it should appear in the file listing.
At some point, you may want to create a directory structure for your site. It's not necessary, but can help to organize your files. If you've ever worked with files on your computer before, you may recognize it from there. It's essentially the same thing. You can create a folder by entering the folder name in the textbox to the left of the "Create Folder" button and then proceeding to click the "Create Folder" button. You can enter a folder by clicking the button with that folder's name on it in the file listing. You can see what folder you're in by looking at the URL listed a little ways down the page. To the left of the URL is a "home" button, which takes you back to your main directory, and an "Up One Level" button, which takes you up a level from the folder you're currently in. If you create folders within folders, then you will probably want to use this at some point.
Deleting a file: this is a very dangerous option. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN DELETING FILES! If you delete something on accident, there is no way of retrieving it, unless we happen to have it backed up. If you do mistakenly delete something, please contact Michael McKelvey ( mmckelve@uiuc.edu) immediately.

How do I change my password? |
|
You have the option to change your password if you want a little more security in your folder. Once you've
logged in to the Project Handin, look in the upper right hand corner of the page and you'll see a link that says
"Change Password." Click on this and you will be taken to a password change page, where you must type in your old
password and then the new one you want to change it to. Assuming you type your old password in correctly, your
new password will be set. It should be ready for use immediately, so the next time you log in to the Project
Handin site, use your new password.
Notes on changing your password:
- This login is not connected to any other login/password you have.
Don't use your Kerberos password, email password, or any other secure password
that you wouldn't want the administrators at MSTE to see. We have access to
all the passwords, and while we trust our employees, it's better for everyone
involved if you just make up a new password for this account to minimize the
risk.
- Please use only letters and numbers in your password. Punctuation will not be accepted, and your password
will be truncated to only whatever is before the punctuation if you try to use it.

How do I download and install programs from the internet? |
|
The basic process is the same for all setup files you'll download from the internet. Bear in mind
that these instructions are written for Windows machines; however, the concepts carry over to the Mac environment too.
The first step is downloading the file from the internet. You will have to navigate through a few pages to
figure out exactly which version you need for some of the files before you can actually download the setup file.
Once you have accomplished this, go ahead and click on the link to download the file. A window will pop up asking
you whether you want to "Run this program from its current location" or "Save this program to disk." You want
to Save the program. Next, select where to save it on your computer, and remember where you put it. The desktop
is usually handy for this purpose. Once the file has downloaded, you'll want to begin the setup by double-clicking
on the file. From this point on, the process is just like any other program you've ever installed.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 |
|
Download Acrobat
(This program is not necessary for this class, but it's a good one to have)
If you follow the link above, you'll be taken to a page where you need to answer a few questions before you
can download Acrobat Reader. You only need to select your platform. If you really want to send them your name
and e-mail address, you can, but it's optional. Once you've selected your Platform in Step 1, click the Download
button in Step 3, and save the file to your disk. Once it's done saving, double-click the icon, and it will begin
the installation process.

Microsoft FrontPage 2002 |
|
Download FrontPage (30 Day Trial for $9.95)
An evaluation version of FrontPage 2002 is available for download from Microsoft's website. If you have
Windows 98, you already have FrontPage Express, so don't bother with FrontPage 2002; however, if you have a
different operating system, you may want to download the trial version of FrontPage 2002. Be aware that you are
actually ordering a CD to be delivered to you, not downloading a file over the internet.
Instructions for finding FrontPage Express on Windows 98:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Internet Tools, and then click FrontPage Express.
If you do not see FrontPage Express on the menu, you can download version 2.0 by going to the
Windows Update site. You'll find it under Internet Authoring in
Product Updates.

Netscape Composer |
|
Download Composer
When you click the link above, you'll go to a page asking you which Netscape product you want.
Look for Netscape Communicator. Click on the link to get Netscape Communicator (not Netscape 6)
and you'll be required to choose the language, operating system, and version of Netscape you want.
Once you've selected the appropriate options, you'll be able to download Netscape Communicator.
You may be asked whether you want to use SmartDownload to download Communicator...
This is a Netscape product which you may or may not want to use. What it does is
if the file download is interrupted, it fixes it, and continues downloading without losing what you've
already downloaded. If you have a flaky internet connection, you may want to use this. Otherwise,
I wouldn't bother with it. Once the file has finished downloading, open it and start the installation.
Note: Netscape Composer comes as part of the Netscape 4.79 package, so don't fret that it says you're
downloading Netscape 4.79; that's what you want.
