Field Trips

Resource Navigation

Field trip I: Lucent Technologies, Friday, June 18, 9 am to 11:30 am. (We will meet back at TCD, 1 pm to 3 pm on Friday).

Directions to Lucent: Indian Hill, Naperville. Warrenville Road, west of Naperville-Warrenville Rd intersection, Building IX. This is the first bldg on the left (south side) as you head west from the Naper-Warrenville intersection. Entrance to bldg is on the south side.

We are meeting with Greg Munie from Lucent. Phone: 630.979.2592.

Things to keep in mind as we go on the field trip to Lucent.

1) Workplace

1 a) What kinds of competencies, that are currently taught in school (whether your field or otherwise) are important for working at a place like Lucent ?

1 b) What kinds of competencies, that are currently NOT taught in school (whether your field or otherwise) are important for working at a place like Lucent ?

2) School subject matter

On the basis of your trip to Lucent, select some topic that you teach that relates, or could relate, to ideas that you saw in place at Lucent. State the grade level and a brief description of the topic that you have chosen.

2a) Give one way in which you could teach this topic differently in the future, in order to better relate that topic to its application at Lucent.

2b) Describe one aspect of this topic that you could emphasize more, or elaborate more upon, because of your visit to Lucent.

3) The changing work place

School (and college) are designed with preparation for the world of work (broadly defined) in mind. Let us say, for the moment, that Lucent is an example of the place of work for which your students are being prepared.

Describe one aspect of your school program (broadly defined) that you would like to see changed in order to better prepare your students for the work place.

4) Reflection: In a paragraph or so, please reflect on how your visit to Lucent has affected you as a teacher--your attitudes about the curriculum, about your students, your approach to teaching, etc.

This course has these major goals:
  1. To give an overview of selected technologies that are currently available for classroom instruction.
  2. To become familiar with (at least) three of these technologies and become proficient in at least one of them.
  3. To review some of the current issues in science and mathematics education (such as the findings of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-TIMSS) and explore some ways in which technology could be used to help address some of those issues.
  4. To review the Illinois Learning Standards, in the light of findings of TIMSS and explore ways in which technology can help implement the Standards
  5. To visit selected field sites in business and industry, and determine ways in which mathematics, science and/or technology are used in those sites. The field trips are being arranged by Goals 2000 staff.
  6. To review illustrative lessons on the World Wide Web that make use of technology to help 'contextualize' the teaching of mathematics and/or science.
  7. To develop an instructional unit (of about 5 days' duration) in your teaching field that makes use of technology to contextualize mathematics and/or science. This unit should explicitly implement the appropriate Illinois Learning Standards, as well.
