For Tues, Oct 5. Regular time and place:
4 pm   262 Armory.
1) Please come to class prepared to share the MOST important idea that
comes out of the 10 references that you have reviewed.
2) Please come to class with an INITIAL list of 3 or 4 categories or issues
that will help to organize your research synthesis (soon to emerge !)
3) For Tues, Oct 26. From your ten (or so) research articles, choose ONE
that is of great interest/significance to your emerging research interests.
For this research article, prepare a DETAILED (about 3-4 pages) summary of
the article and save as a web doc in your folder. (so that the rest of the
class can go through this, when you make your presentations, starting Oct 26.)
Outline for the summary:
1) Biblio reference in APA format (author, title,etc)
Any information about the principal author (investigator)--university or
other affiliation, areas of research interests, etc. This info is sometime
provided in the reporting journal, maybe at the end of the journal.
2) Research question (s):
3) Topic, grade level, disciplinary emphasis (for example: children's
cognition ? Social constructivism ? whatever)
4) Methodology: quantitative or qualitative;
N subjects; procedures (what was done to carry out the research);
statistical (or other) methods used
5) Major findings (be selective...2 will be fine)
6) Implications
7) Your own comments about this research: Why is this of special interest
to you ? What implications does it have for your own emerging philosophy as
a mathematics educator ? What is the most important strength of the
research ? Limitation ?
(Obviously, this is to be a serious distillation of the research report,
since it is to be done in only a few pages.)
Please plan to discuss this on Tues. Oct 5. See you then. kjt
