Key Indicator 3.0: Departmental support of instructional staff

This key indicator is intended to measure the degree to which the department provides support for the professional development of its instructional staff. Examples include: meetings/workshops on mathematical content and/or instructional issues, orientation for new staff/teaching assistants on effective teaching, mentoring for staff, peer observation, and periodic discussion groups on effective instructional methods.

3.1

The department supports and encourages the professional development of its instructional staff in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

This is a measure of professional development available to the instructional staff that is focused on teaching.

3.2

The department supports and encourages the professional development of its instructional staff in the knowledge of and ability to do mathematics.

The intent of this indicator is to investigate whether or not the department supports its faculty in the enhancement of their mathematical knowledge.

3.3

The instructional staff is using instructional technologies in the classroom.

Intended to report the extent to which the instructional staff is making use of technology to teach mathematics.

3.4

The instructional staff is using innovative instructional approaches in the classroom.

The intent of this indicator is to investigate whether or not the department is employing various instructional innovations in the teaching of its courses.

3.5

The instructional staff participates in professional associations.

Reports extent of participation of instructional staff in professional associations.
