Analysis of Data
Obviously, it was impossible to use animals of the same age, average
production, somatic cell count, and body type without severely limiting the size
of the experimental group. Therefore, multiple regression analysis was chosen
to compare injected animals to un-injected ones because it allows for the
mathematical control of these factors. This was possible because all of these
co-variables were quantifiable.
Multiple regression analysis is an effective tool in controlling for the
uncontrollable, if those factors can be measured. In this case, genetics could
not be measured, but the important factors of age (measured in months), body
score (0-5, 0 being an extremely small animal), average production per lactation
period, and previous somatic cell counts (a pre-test of the response variable)
could all be measured. These values were measured prior to the start of the
experiment. This meant that the co-variables could be included in the model as
a means of removing the effects of the co-variables on the response variable.
In other words, by deriving a model using measured values for all of these
predictors, it is as if animals with the same age, same body score, same
previous production, and same previous somatic cell count were being compared.
The appropriate model assumed no interaction among six predictors. The control
and experimental groups were described in the model using binary predictors. In
one of these predictors, the data points were assigned a value of one if they
were injected and zero if they were not, and in a separate predictor, they were
assigned a value of zero if they were injected and one if they were
not. The derived coefficients of these two predictors would be the point of
comparison between the two groups of animals (injected and non-injected) while
controlling for differences in the co-variables.
